This month marks the 25th anniversary of the Johan Cruijff ArenA (former Amsterdam ArenA). The ArenA has welcomed over 40 million visitors in 25 years’ time. Since 2018, the stadium is proudly referred to as the Johan Cruijff ArenA. As soon as it was opened in 1996, the ArenA became an iconic location, one of the most multi-functional stadiums in the world at that time and the first European stadium with a retracting roof.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA not only functioned as football stadium during the EK 2020. As part of the cooperation agreement between the City of Amsterdam and the Johan Cruijff ArenA Innovation Amsterdam, four breakthrough sessions took place during the tournament. The purpose of these sessions was to strengthen high-level collaboration with companies, knowledge institutions, residents of Amsterdam and the municipality and to realize breakthroughs for major transitions together. Each session covered one specific transition theme:
Track, monitor and operate your assets remotely.
The Calculus platform offers tools for complete control in the most diverse areas. Like Smart Assets, for monitoring and securing vehicles and mobile or fixed equipment. Or Smart Buildings, for controlling and optimising, among other things, energy and water consumption, and the indoor and outdoor climate.
Remotely following, monitoring and operating all these things results in profit, both in terms of time and money. Plus: the system leads to a more accurate deployment of (maintenance) staff.
During last Saturday's Netherlands-Latvia game, the ArenA was a huge Living Lab. As an innovative stadium, we're really proud of that! Many innovations were tested as part of the Fieldlab research programme. These can contribute to allowing spectators and audiences into stadiums and other events safely and responsibly. The ArenA has been a Living Lab for innovations for several years. During the past year, it has played an active role as a test location for innovative solutions that can help accelerate the reopening of event locations.
