Distinction for ArenA CEO Henk Markerink

Today Henk Markerink received the Frans Bannick Cocq Medal from deputy mayor Victor Everhardt. The CEO of the ArenA got the award because of his sportive, economical and social commitments for Amsterdam and areas, and especially for the Zuidoost neighbourhood.

Henk Markerink has been the head of the ArenA for about 25 years. He was involved with the design and the building of the stadium, and under his leadership the ArenA grew into a multifunctional stadium and an icon for Amsterdam. Markerink knew how to bring big sport events and other well known international events to Amsterdam, which made sure the stadium was well known all around the world.

As an ambassador for Zuidoost, Markerink commits to the societal and sustainable developments in the city district, together with other organisations. Together with the municipality of Amsterdam, he helps the citizens of the district get jobs, under the name of the Project 'Amsterdam Zuidoost Works'. He was also a member of the Economic Board of the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam, and worked on a smart, green and healthy future for the region. Besides all of this, Markerink provided an active contribution to multiple sport events and associations. He was a treasured discussion partner for Amsterdam.

Markerink, who is retiring in September, recently get appointed to be the chairman of VNO-NCW of the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam.

Frans Banninck Cocq medal

The Frans Bannick Cocq medal gets appointed to people who have made exceptional contributions to the city of Amsterdam for at least twelve years. These contributions can be in the areas of sports, science, journalism, arts, politics and economic fields.
