On Thursday January 19th, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament is coming to the Johan Cruijff ArenA! First things first: what is the Tata Steel Chess Tournament? 🤷🏾

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is often seen as the "Wimbledon of chess". It's the event for chess players where the biggest players come together, as well as thousands of amateur players and visitors from all over the world. This year is the 85th edition and, like every year, it takes place in Wijk aan Zee. During the Tournament it's tradition that one round gets played in a special location, the Tournament goes On Tour! That's why this year, the event travels to the Johan Cruijff ArenA for one round.

The players 👩🏼‍💼

During the Tournament the world's biggest chess masters come by in the Johan Cruijff ArenA for the fifth round of the Tournament. Players like Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren will be present.

Commentary 🎤

The round that takes place in the Johan Cruijff ArenA will, of course, be talked about with live commentary. Comedian, writer and chess player Tex de Wit will take vare of the live commentary on this day, so the chess matches can be followed in a good mood.

    During the round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament that takes place in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, you'll get the chance to catch a glimpse of the biggest chess masters in the world while they're in their element. The Tournament also celebrates its 85th anniversary this year!

    On Thursday January 19, one round of the Tournament will be played in the Johan Cruijfff ArenA in Amsterdam.

    You can get free tickets for the fifth round on January 19, in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, via this link.
  • Where do I enter the stadium?
    The entrance for the Tournament will be Main Entrance E.
  • When does the event start and end?
    The play round for the masters starts at 14:00 and will end around 21:00. The stadium will be open from 13:00 for visitors.
  • What are the house rules from the organiser of the event?
    • It is not allowed to bring big bags into the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Only bags with a maximum size of A4-size and 10 centimeters thick are allowed.
    • To ensure fair play, all mobile phones, tablets and suchlike are not allowed in the Playing Hall. Not even just to take pictures.
    • Photo's can only be made with a digital camera, without flash.
    • Please remember to not be and talk too loud in the building.
  • What do I do when I or someone else needs (medical) help during the event?
    Find a steward or hostess from the Johan Cruijff ArenA as quickly as possibly. They'll help you immediately.
