Each year brings us closer to achieving our goal of a stadium that's vibrant and sustainable. We've learned a great deal over the past thirty years about impact and how we can enhance our positive contribution.
On event days, the Johan Cruijff ArenA is packed with tens of thousands of people. We're proud of that, and at the same time we realise this asks a lot from the world around us. Which is why we're determined to lower our energy intensity and CO2 emissions as far as possible without compromising on the experience of our visitors.
How visitors travel to the Johan Cruijff ArenA is a form of emissions over which we have no direct control. Nevertheless, we feel responsible for this. Read more about how we address this here.
High on our list of priorities is our goal to reduce our own emissions to zero. What does this mean?Operating on 100% green energy and using everything we consume wisely. Our goals are to:
We always want to aim higher. That said, we can also be proud of what has been achieved so far. In the past six years we have reduced our energy usage by 21%. This has reduced our own energy consumption to just 3% of the total emissions. These projects have been important in achieving this milestone.
With 4200 solar panels, two super batteries and the bundled energy services from Groendus, the Johan Cruijff ArenA can run on 100% renewable electricity. We did this for the first time in 2024.
The ArenAPoort aims to be carbon-neutral by 2040. What role does the ArenA play in that?
Raising the bar is sometimes easier said than done. Sometimes we are hampered by external factors that we can’t control. From district heating to packaging and from construction projects to the food ingredients – we don't have full control, but we are taking full responsibility.
