Quality never stands still
Every year, over 2 million people enjoy the best matches, concerts, guided tours and corporate events at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. As a multi-purpose stadium, we aim to provide our visitors with an unforgettable experience. Thanks to large-scale refurbishment projects, visitors benefit from more space and greater comfort. A super-fast network ensures a smooth and safe visit to the stadium.
Extension to the east side of the ArenA
The east side of the Johan Cruijff ArenA has undergone a spectacular transformation. A huge transparent cushion façade has been installed on the outside, whilst on the inside, walkways on the first and second tiers have been made three times wider. In addition, the interior of the stadium’s west side has been given a stylish makeover, and the new corner stands were completed in the summer of 2020. As a result, the stadium has gained a total of 880 extra seats in the previously empty corner sections of four existing stands. These are milestones in the stadium’s major transformation. With these refurbishments, we aim to offer visitors attending Ajax matches, Dutch national team matches, concerts and other large-scale events more space and comfort.
Additional stands in the corner sections
In 2020, the Johan Cruijff ArenA gained a total of 880 additional seats in the previously empty corner stands and in four existing stands. The new stands were custom-made in the factory and add approximately 475 m² of stand area to the stadium. Access to the new corner stands is via sections 101, 111, 117 and 124.
Each corner stand has a movable section that allows the bottom six rows to be raised. This enables vehicles and equipment, including the pitch lighting, to be brought into the ArenA when matches are not taking place. With these additional seats, the ArenA and Ajax are meeting the growing demand for seating during football matches.
Opportunities offered by the 5G network
The roll-out of a 5G network offers fantastic opportunities for improved event management and a better stadium experience. That is why the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the City of Amsterdam and KPN have joined forces in the 5G Field Lab Amsterdam Zuidoost. By testing 5G applications, they are working with other technology partners to explore how waiting times can be reduced and safety in and around the stadium can be improved. Thanks to the higher capacity of the 5G network, high-resolution camera footage can, for example, be transmitted in real time. This footage can then be used to guide visitors more effectively to their seats in the stadium, or to the train station, for instance. A 5G network also facilitates payments via smartphone. The technology guarantees fast, reliable and stable payment transactions.
