Every year brings us closer to a stadium that is vibrant and sustainable. Over the past thirty years, we have learnt a great deal about our impact and how we can further reduce it. You can find the key milestones in the areas of energy and CO₂ here.
How can we reduce our energy consumption and CO₂ emissions without compromising our visitors’ experience?
We are fully committed to sustainable energy. But even when it is sustainable, we use it sparingly. Only 6 per cent of our CO₂ emissions come from our energy consumption. The remaining 94 per cent comes from the supply chain: from catering and travel to waste processing. That is why we are also fully committed to reducing CO₂ emissions in these areas.
High on our list of priorities is our goal of reducing our own emissions to zero. This means using green energy and managing everything we consume wisely. This will enable us to:

How visitors travel to the Johan Cruijff ArenA is a form of emissions over which we have no direct control. Nevertheless, we feel responsible for this. Read more about how we address this here.
We always want to raise the bar. Nevertheless, we can also be proud of where we are now. For example, we have reduced our energy consumption by 21% over the past six years. This is a significant step forward, as it has reduced our own energy consumption to just 3% of our total emissions. The projects listed below have been key to achieving this milestone.

With 4200 solar panels, two super batteries and the bundled energy services from Groendus, the Johan Cruijff ArenA can run on 100% renewable electricity. We did this for the first time in 2024.

The ArenAPoort aims to be carbon-neutral by 2040. What role does the ArenA play in that?

LED-groeilampen en slimme sensoren houden ons grasveld groen én verlagen het energieverbruik.
Raising the bar is sometimes easier said than done. Especially as we are sometimes dependent on impacts that we do not cause ourselves: impacts from our supply chain. From district heating to packaging, and from construction projects to the origin of food ingredients: we do not have complete control over these, but we do take full responsibility. That is why we are open about the challenges and how we continue to make progress.
