The Johan Cruijff ArenA is the premier venue for the Netherlands’ biggest events. Take last year, for example. Hundreds of thousands of visitors came to our iconic venue to see acts such as the Toppers, P!NK and AC/DC. That guarantees a spectacular show, but unfortunately also generates a lot of waste. Here, we explain how we are taking steps towards becoming a circular stadium.
Waste not, want not
Did you know we produce more than 500 tons of waste in our stadium every year? And don't panic: a whopping 50% of that is residual waste. Fortunately, our residual waste gets sorted by the waste processor when it arrives there. If there are any valuable materials remaining, they get extracted and the rest is ground into pellets that go into the incinerator. The incineration process creates energy in the form of electricity, heat and power for Dutch households and industry.
A great solution from our waste partner Renewi, but we still want to go further.
Our goal is twofold; produce less waste overall and keep reducing the amount of residual waste leaving our stadium. Because we believe waste doesn't exist. Everything can have a second (third or eight) life, which is why we separate waste here, in the stadium. Using our trash bins and our own Waste Station. Our goal is to produce only 15% residual waste by 2030. Eventually, that will go down to 0%.
